MUSIC
In September, our season kicks off with a three-night, must-see festival of cinema and music with The Joshua Light Show. The legendary visualists of live music will be joined by: Grammy-winning percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie & experimental harpist Zeena Parkins; pioneering minimalist composer Terry Riley with his son, Gyan Riley; an electrifying ensemble of musical giants -- John Zorn, Lou Reed, Bill Laswell, and Milford Graves, indie psychedelic pop giants Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT, and world music powerhouses Debo Band and Forro in the Dark.
Powerful music continues through the season with "ukelele hero" Jake Shimabukuro who redefines the instrument earning comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis. In the spring, go on a musical journey through Australia's cultural heartland with deeply moving songs sung in 11 different Aboriginal languages by The Black Arm Band in dirtsong.
THEATER
Vital aspects of our mission include bringing excellent international artists to our community and building audiences for the future of live performance. These two US Premieres, while quite different in content and form, exemplify those goals: Belgium's Ontroerend Goed's defies definition with Audience which engages in immediate, daring explorations of the line between audience and performer, delving deep into manipulation and what it means to be a viewer; and, from Tel Aviv, Not By Bread Alone ignites the senses, titillates taste buds, and fires imaginations through the extraordinary storytellers of the world’s only professional deaf-blind acting company as they bake and break bread together with the audience while exploring their memories and dreams. Also, get access to these sold out shows from London, with National Theatre Live's broadcast screenings of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, The Last of the Haussmans, and Timon of Athens.
DANCE
The breathtaking CIRCA returns to Skirball with another US Premiere in Wunderkammer, a sexy, funny and explosive spectacle of sheer physical poetry. Other dance highlights will include Monica Bill Barnes & Company, last seen on our stage in May as part of the This American Life Live! event. This October they will perform a full evening, including excerpts seen in that event, and will joined by Ira Glass for a post-performance discussion. This spring will mark the the arrival of Meryl Tankard's The Oracle, one of her most gripping and acclaimed works to date, performed by Paul White who is one of Australia’s most highly regarded dance artists.
