Big Red Chair Family Series favorite, The Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia (Goodnight Moon, Guess How Much I Love You?) returns to bring back the cherished children’s stories about self-discovery and embracing your own uniqueness.

“Mesmerising and interactive...theatre for adults could learn a few tricks from this ravenous little caterpillar.” SPOONFED (UK)

The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favourites transforms award winning children’s book author/illustrator Eric Carle’s charmingly collaged tissue paper illustrations into equally engaging magical puppets. Follow The Very Hungry Caterpillar as he progresses through an amazing variety of foods towards his eventual metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly. Then join the mischievous Little Cloud who slips away from its formation and transforms itself into various imaginative shapes – a sheep, an airplane and even a shark! Finally, embark on an adventurous trip to the zoo with The Mixed Up Chameleon. Upon seeing the beautiful animals there, the little chameleon tries changing to look like each one of them until learning to embrace its own uniqueness.

PRE-SHOW: Join us one hour prior to each performance for an arts and crafts educational activity. We will learn about a butterfly's lifecycle and create wall-hanging decorations!

The caterpillar in Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar has a very active week eating its way through different types of foods. But where did the caterpillar come from, and what will happen to it after those 7 days? Through a pre-show educational activity, children will learn about the four separate stages that constitute a butterfly’s complete life cycle: laying eggs on tree leaves, the development of the egg into a glutton caterpillar, its transformation into a fragile chrysalis or pupa (protected by a cocoon) as it grows into an adult, and finally, its metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly.

POST-SHOW: Stay for a Q&A with Company members immediately following the conclusion of each performance.

With its objective of introducing very little children to their first performing arts experience, this production has served to encourage literacy and the love of reading in over 4,000,000 young people on four continents since it started touring in 1999. Directed and designed by puppetry master Jim Morrow, with evocative original music by Nova Scotian composer Steven Naylor, and innovative “black light” staging techniques, these cherished tales are brought to life, guiding a new generation into the world of live performance.
