Skirball Center for the Performing Arts - New York University

Randy Weston and his African Rhythms Orchestra celebrate James Reese Europe and the 369th Regiment of World War I - also known as the "Harlem Rattlers."

In 1918, Lieutenant James Reese Europe, an American ragtime and early jazz bandleader, arranger and composer, made military and music history by being the first African American to lead troops into battle, and spread the ''jazz germ'' throughout the European continent. This concert is the first in a two-part program. The second part will be on Monday, November 10th, a roundtable discussion on the 369th Regiment in popular culture.
