New York City Opera, in conjunction with OPERA America’s New Works Forum, presents the premiere workshop for new American opera. VOX Contemporary Opera Lab gives American composers and audiences the opportunity to hear professional performances of new operatic works, unstaged and read by members of the New York City Opera orchestra and soloists.
“The nurturing haven American opera needs.”New York Magazine
This year’s selections are a diverse group, ranging from explorations of the psychological states of soldiers in the Red Army (The Last Act of Revolution) and the societal restraints binding three women over three different centuries (In A Mirror, Darkly) to a farcical romp about clinging to the fantasy of an unrequited lover (The Wondrous Woman Within). VOX 2012 will also see the return of celebrated composer John Zorn (La Machine de l’être, read at VOX 2007 and staged at NYC Opera in 2011) with his new work The Holy Visions.
As the only program in the country that gives composers the opportunity to hear their new works and works-in progress with full instrumental ensembles and professional soloists, VOX continues to be a vital part of the fabric of American opera.
VOX 2012 IS MADE POSSIBLE WITH LEADERSHIP SUPPORT FROM THE ANDREW W. MELLON FOUNDATION. MAJOR SUPPORT IS PROVIDED BY THE AARON COPLAND FUND FOR MUSIC, INC., THE FRANCIS GOELET CHARITABLE LEAD TRUSTS, AND THE HELEN F. WHITAKER FUND.
