Hosted by Ann Northrop of GayUSATV.org, this living timeline gathers key items from university archives, student collections, and first-hand accounts in order to confront the ways New York University responded to demands for LGBTQ+ rights in the aftermath of the Stonewall Uprising. From reliving the occupation of the Weinstein dormitory in 1970 through to the premiere screening of What Stonewall Means to Me, a short documentary exploring NYU’s unique relationship with the Stonewall legacy, this event describes the different ways NYU as an institution has participated in this human rights struggle, and explores how its participation has changed over the years.

Featured storytellers include:

  • The Tribe Theatre Company NYC, performing segments of Ike Holter’s Hit the Wall
  • Karla JayJohn Knoebel, Perry Brass, and Ron Auerbacher, occupiers of the Weinstein Dormitory, 1970
  • Kenneth Kidd, ACT UP founding member & Director of Special Projects and Events, NYU CAS
  • Stephen Rechner and Professor Paul Langland, lead campaigners for Domestic Partner Benefits at NYU
  • Callie Hirsch, Facilitator of NYU Womyn’s Rap Group & Co-Organizer of the first NYU Pride Trolley

  • Axel Keating, Social & Cultural Co-Chair for NYU’s Pride@work Initiative, Student Affairs professional, educator, & community organizer
  • Dr. Lisa Coleman, Senior Vice President for Global Inclusion, Diversity, and Strategic Innovation and NYU’s first Chief Diversity Officer.

Make sure to arrive early for your chance to record your own story with the Generations Project, meet and greet the folks behind NYU’s Pride@work Initiative, and catch an interactive performance piece by artist, director, and current NYU employee Kate Conroy.
