Direct from Bahia in northern Brazil comes this irresistible 25-member troupe known for its explosive drumming, frenzied dancing and irrepressible energy. Its display of Bahian folkloric dances of African origin was described as a “non-stop extravaganza” in the San Francisco Chronicle. This year’s program, Sacred Heritage, was created for the group’s 20th anniversary and features dances in honor of the gods (orixas) of the Yoruban candomblé religion, the dramatic capoeira (martial arts) and maculele warrior dance, the exhilarating samba reggae, and the company’s masterpiece, Afixiré (“dance of happiness”).
“This exuberant…
uniquely Brazilian group should absolutely be seen.”
