National Theatre Live brings you the best of British theatre, recorded live and then broadcast from London to a world-wide audience via satellite.

This exciting initiative launched its five show pilot season last year with Phèdre starring Helen Mirren. This year’s line-up at the Skirball Center includes an encore screening of Phèdre, Complicite’s A Disappearing Number, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the smash Broadway hit FELA!, Donmar Warehouse's production of King Lear, a new Frankestein directed by Danny Boyle and Chekov's Russian classic, The Cherry Orchard

King Lear

An aging monarch. A kingdom divided. A child's love rejected. As Lear's world descends into chaos, all that he once believed is brought into question. One of the greatest works in Western literature, King Lear explores the very nature of human existence: love and duty, power and loss, good and evil.

Sir Derek Jacobi, one of the National Theatre's founding members, and Michael Grandage continue their collaborative efforts, having previously worked together on The Tempest, Don Carlos and Twelfth Night. Grandage’s creative team – Christopher Oram, Neil Austin and Adam Cork were behind the company’s recent Broadway smash hit and Tony Award-winning Red. The cast of King Lear also includes: Pippa Bennett-Warner, Ron Cook, Michael Hadley, Paul Jesson, Gina McKee and Justine Mitchell.

Running time, including intermission: 3 hours, 10 minutes

"Grandage's production... remakes the idea of what Shakespeare can be."
