The Lebanese Medical Association for Sexual Health (LebMASH) is a leading organization advocating for the rights and health of LGBTQ individuals in Lebanon. In a country where LGBTQ communities often face societal stigma and legal challenges, LebMASH works to bridge the gap in healthcare access through education, research, and advocacy. One of the organization’s key focuses is educating healthcare providers about the specific needs and experiences of LGBTQ individuals, promoting a more inclusive and respectful healthcare environment.

LebMASH also tackles harmful practices, such as Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE), which remain prevalent in Lebanon. By raising awareness about the damaging effects of these practices and advocating for their abolishment, LebMASH plays a crucial role in improving mental health outcomes for LGBTQ individuals. LebMASH is currently conducting the first study in the MENA region documenting the experiences of LGBTQ people in Lebanon with SOCE. In parallel, LebMASH is actively working on eradicating drivers of SOCE and making it easier for LGBTQ people to access affirmative services through an online directory and supporting services at a specialized clinic at the American University of Beirut Medical Center.

The organization’s work extends to public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing stigma and misinformation around sexual health and LGBTQ issues. This video is an example of a campaign that went viral in 2016. By engaging with both the healthcare sector and the general public, LebMASH fosters a more compassionate and informed society. Their initiatives also include publishing position statements and guides for healthcare professionals and organizing workshops to address the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals in accessing quality care.

LebMASH’s commitment to change in Lebanon highlights the intersection of healthcare and human rights, ensuring that LGBTQ individuals receive the dignity and care they deserve. Through these efforts, LebMASH continues to push for systemic change, building a future where healthcare is inclusive of all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
