Artist Notes

Eight bodies are moving around the stage in mysterious twitching. They march, exercise, and celebrate, but it is unclear if their movements represent suffering or joy, pride or fear. Together they create a security force, a mechanical and turbulent organization consisting of highly disciplined bodies. Trained to perpetrate violence against themselves and others, those recorded in their bodies impregnate all the levels of their being and living. Maintain order! That is the imperative. In an abstract sort of museum space, security forces, their victims, and fantastic horror characters come together in a ritual of confession, atonement, and complaint.

Oasis of Impunity proposes a choreographic reflection on the nature of the State violence that had linked the police force with citizens in a permanent dialectical throughout history, focusing on the systemic and personal motivations of the subjects performing such violence:

  • How are individual conviction and violent discipline linked?
  • Who uses and controls the statal monopoly of violence?
  • How can a democratic society find consensus on the legitimate use of violence?
  • When do fear and desacralization of the human body become the only strategies of indoctrination, punishment, and control?

Starting with the social outburst experience and the social upheaval that overflowed Santiago de Chile streets on October 18th, 2019, Marco Layera and La Re-sentida company propose a detailed examination of the systemic conditions and personal motivation for violent relations between the State and its citizens, focusing on those perpetrating statal violence. Oasis of Impunity is theatrical research on the ways violence, outrage, and horror inhabit and overgrow the bodies.

This proposal is an invitation to raise issues not related only to the Chilean society but concerning all the democracies that now are questioning their history: How can a democratic State face its violent monopoly?

As a model project to work in international constellations, this play has been rehearsed in Santiago de Chile and premiered on tour in Berlin (Schaubühne), Múnich (Kammerspiele), and Santiago (Matucana 100). Its creation was conducted within the framework of the artistic research project “Historical memory as a work on the present” of the Münchner Kammerspiele and Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” (EVZ). The creative process was preceded by a scenic laboratory facilitated by the Goethe Institute, over 500 people showed up from all over Chile, 200 of them were invited to the laboratories. The experiences of these people were the starting point for the development of this proposal.

“We do not pretend, nor think about moving in a symbolic or territorial way what is happening on the street to a stage. Taking what is occurring there or reproducing the semiotic or semantic resources seems aesthetically and ethically inappropriate. As well as, participating in a theatre spectacle should not conduct in the demobilization of protests on the streets.

The audience is not welcome to witness what is happening on the streets. Conversely, the performative power of what occurs outside the theatre challenges us as creators and leaves us in crisis. It requires our art to be reinvented to be part of and to collaborate in this social process, inviting us, as artists, to move forward to the unknown and uncertain, to lose ourselves, and constantly expose ourselves. Oasis of Impunity is an artistic rehearsal that owes nothing to reality, nevertheless, is committed to it.” – Marco Layera

Imanol Ibarra Lertora Imanol was born in Quito, Ecuador. He is the son of Chilean parents and the youngest after four sisters. He lived there until he was six years old, when his parents decided to return to Chile. As a child, he was always accompanied by his collection of dinosaurs, drawing, books and movies. The dinosaurs were stored away, but the stories remain. He appeared in the theater at the age of sixteen, the age at which he saw his first play. That moment led him to study acting where, in addition to theater, a great interest and taste for dance emerged. It is for this reason that he has developed more in that dance, participating as a performer in body research processes, such as “So… now is later” (Stgo A Mil 2019) with choreographer Elizabeth Rodríguez and “Emerger” (Stgo A Mil 2020) by Jose Vidal & Co. He is currently part of the play “The Oasis of Impunity” (FIND Festival, 2022) with the La Re-Sentida.
