In 1998, a neuroscientist and a philosopher bet on whether we would find the neural basis of consciousness within 25 years. On June 23 at NYU’s Skirball Theater, that bet will be resolved.
Over the last 25 years, a number of theories of the neural basis of consciousness have been developed. In the last five years or so, many researchers have collaborated in a major project to experimentally test leading theories of the basis of consciousness in the brain.
At this event, the results of one key experiment will be fully unveiled for the first time. These results will be used to help determine whether we have indeed found the neural basis of consciousness.
Participants include Heather Berlin (the master of ceremonies), David Chalmers (the philosopher), Christof Koch (the neuroscientist), Melanie Boly and Stanislas Dehaene (the theorists), Daniel Dennett (the skeptic), Lucia Melloni and Liad Mudrik (the experimentalists), and Per Snaprud (the journalist).
There will also be consciousness-related musical entertainment by Joe LeDoux and the Amygdaloids and Baba Brinkman. The event will be introduced by Ned Block.
This event will be a free public event hosted by the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness, which is meeting at NYU on June 22-25. The event is also made possible by the Templeton World Charity Foundation’s project “Accelerating Research on Consciousness”, which develops experimental collaborations for testing theories of consciousness.
