ABOUT THE PROGRAM
I am thrilled that Seán Curran Company is making its NYU Skirball Center debut with the world premiere of PATH and the return of Everywhere All the Time.
Everywhere All the Time is a meditation – sometimes quiet, sometimes clamorous – on loneliness and solitude. When I made this work in 2018, I was pondering the ways digital and virtual connections have overpowered human relationships and our relationship to the natural world. In the intervening years, we have become even more interconnected through technology and yet more solitary. This tension, a sense of constant expansion and contraction in our search for elusive human connections, is at the heart of Everywhere All the Time.
PATH is inspired by the Camino de Santiago, the ancient Catholic pilgrimage route across northern Spain to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. The transformation experienced by those who travel this path is not unlike the experience of making art. Both artists and spiritual seekers are searching for meaning. In the end – whether or not we find what are looking for – we’ve given ourselves over to the pursuit of life’s purpose. For me, my life as an artist has forged a path toward self-acceptance and personal transformation. PATH is a prayer, of sorts, for my former self: a pious child who became a gay teen excluded from religion. It is a requiem for my Irish Catholic parents, whose faith never wavered but that I never understood.
Everywhere All the Time and PATH reflect our desires for love and acceptance, meaning and purpose, faith and reason. In experiencing these performances with us, you join a community pushing against a tide of collective loneliness, embracing our chosen families, and using art to make sense of a chaotic universe. – Seán Curran
