ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

What is this?

Phantom of the Opera is a live, interactive digital performance streamed from Theater in Quarantine’s East Village apartment. Using CultureHub Broadcaster, audiences can toggle in real time between two camera feeds:

– the onstage performance, and

– a behind-the-scenes view showing how it’s made.

It’s a hybrid of theater, cinema, and live television — performed and broadcast simultaneously.

Is it really live?

Yes. There are literally 10 people in a very small East Village apartment somewhere performing this for you every single night of the run, and you will be able to see exactly how via a backstage camera on the CultureHub Broadcaster.

What is Culturehub?

CultureHub is a global art and technology community that was born out of decades of collaboration between La MaMa and the Seoul Institute of the Arts, Korea’s first contemporary performing arts school. These two visionary institutions sought to explore how the internet and digital technologies could foster a more sustainable model for international exchange and creativity.

Since its founding in 2009, CultureHub has grown into a global network with studios in New York, Los Angeles, Korea, Indonesia, and Italy, providing connected environments for artists to critically examine our evolving relationship to technology. Through residencies, live productions, and educational programming, CultureHub advances the work of artists experimenting with emerging technologies in search of new artistic forms. CultureHub builds new partnerships that expand our network and provide increased access to online and offline platforms that fuel artist mobility, create opportunities for cultural exchange, and broaden human understanding through the convergence of art, technology, and education.

Is this the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical?

No — this is not the Broadway or Masquerade: The Immersive Phantom production. This Phantom of the Opera is a new experimental work by Theater in Quarantine, inspired by the 1925 silent film and created specially for NYU Skirball. It features live performers, and interactive livestream technology — not songs from the musical.

HOW TO WATCH THE SHOW

Can I watch on my phone or tablet?

To use the interactive toggle feature, you must watch on a laptop or desktop computer. Phones and tablets are not supported for the interactive experience.

If you’d like to watch on a television, you can open the link using your TV’s web browser or connect your computer via HDMI — just note that the interactive features may work best on a computer.

When will I get the link?

You’ll receive:

  • An order confirmation after purchase, with no link
  • A livestream link via email at noon the day of the performance
  • You will also receive a “curtains up” reminder email 1 hour before the performance

What is I didn’t get my link?

First, double-check your spam folder! It’s also important that you bought your ticket using the same email where you’d like the access link sent. f you’re still having trouble, contact the NYU Skirball Box Office at [email protected] for assistance.

What if the link doesn’t work?

First, double-check that you’re opening the link on a laptop or desktop browser (Chrome or Firefox preferred). If you’re still having trouble, contact the NYU Skirball Box Office at [email protected] for assistance.

In the event of a technical issue on our end, a backup stream will be made available on YouTube. That link will already be included in your show-day email, and our chat moderator will post it in real time if needed. The backup stream is view-only and does not include the interactive toggle.

Can I share my link?

No. Each ticket link is unique and valid for a single viewer. Please help us preserve the intimacy of this experience by not sharing it publicly.
