From 2019-2022, we paired each show in NYU Skirball’s season with a complementary text – including fiction, non-fiction, memoir, graphic novels, and poetry. The majority of the texts were published within 5 years of the clubs’ meetings. Each book shared themes or concepts with the curricular theme and performances of each season. Consider it a cross-genre take on comparative literature.

Originally designed as a pre-show gathering in the lobby, the series was a popular zoom option during the first few years of Covid, before in-person programming resumed, and particularly during the summer of 2020, when the focus of the club shifted to readings on race & justice in the US.

We’ve gathered the archives here, including information about each book, interviews with the authors, links to the show(s) they were originally paired with, for the 2019-early 2020 texts, and quotes/discussion questions for the Virtual Book Club offerings.

NEED A COPY OF A BOOK?

Order a copy from our bookshop.org shop, and NYU Skirball will receive a portion of the proceeds.

Fall 2022 @ Hybrid Book Club

We’ve paired each of the curricular themes in our season with a complementary text – including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. This semester, our Book Club picks are the five winners of the 2021 National Book Awards. Each book shares themes or concepts with the curricular theme and performances. Consider it a cross-genre take on comparative literature. Find out more and join the discussion.

This semester, you can discuss the book in 3 ways.

  1. Meet in the lobby before Friday evening performances @ 6:30PM
  2. Discussion boards for each book
  3. 2 zoom meetings, for discussions focusing on 2 of the books – Nov 4 & Dec 2 @ 6PM
